The sunlight was bright, but offered no warmth on this winter morn. It merely made him squint as he limped carefully up the snow-covered steps to the palace.

The guard knew full well who the old man in the black mask and cloak was, as he had been to visit the Chancellor countless times before. But rules were rules, and he offered his pass for inspection with no complaint. Soon enough his old friend would see him seated in a comfortable chair near the fire. That and a generous goblet of brandy would ease the ache in his bones.

The message he had removed from the pigeon's leg had indicated a matter of some urgency, and he wondered at its import.
