hi WIM;
I've been a cigarette smoker for 45+yrs. I've always smoked unfiltered Camels and my Doc. says the lungs are fine every year in my check-ups. And I have my shot of vodka and a couple beers every day. I don't remember the last time I was drunk.
I think it's in the genetic makeup weather it will have long term effects. My father drank & smoked all his life and died when he was 80.
Yeah, it has it's draw-backs. For instance, there's no way I could chase Naughty around a NYC block, catch her and spank her. lol

Hey, Wim!!! I wish I could go to Amsterdam and try the really good stuff that's legal there.... And I don't just mean the great Dutch beers, although they also are fantastic...

As for cigarette- I have never been a "regular smoker," so I guess you could say I took an easy way out, never really started.

Interestingly enough though, I smoked the "most" when I was 14-18 years old, which was usually about a couple of cigarette per week, totaled up to about a pack per month, LOL... That's the age I drunk the most as well.... Yea, I was an early bloomer...

I stopped smoking cold turkey when I came to the U.S. when I was 18, mainly because, well, I had to.... There was no way of getting hold of the stuff, as the stores actually checked IDs, there were no vending machines (the biggest culture shock!!!) and I didn't know anyone who would get them for me. I was too broke anyway... I was in college... need I say more??!!

Well- when I was smoking at home, I always stole my Mom's cigarettes (she smoked about two packs a day and bought cartons at a time, so she never noticed if a pack went missing once in awhile) so I never needed to pay for them.

I have had a few cigarettes since then (less than one every few months,) and still enjoy the sensation of the nicotine rushing through my system, but I don't have enough determination to keep smoking... I hate going out when it's freezing cold/ burning hot/ miserable outside. Yea, it's pretty pathetic, but I am just too lazy to be a smoker in the U.S.

I stopped drinking then as well, but I picked it right back up as soon as I was finally 21!!!

Incidentally- in Japan, 80% of men and 60% of women smoke cigarette... yet Japanese people have the longest life expectancy in the whole world, esp. women, LOL. So- I am not all that sure re. the scare tactics about the harmful effects of smoking.

While so many people smoke in Japan, surprisingly enough (or maybe not?) throwing out a cigarette butt on the street is really frowned upon there... In fact, there are special duty people (kind of like those who issue parking offense tickets here in the U.S.) looming around the streets of Tokyo. "Offenders" have to pay a hefty fine, anywhere bet. $20.- to $100.-, depending on the township. Most of the smokers carry their own portable ashtray (I affectionately call them butt cups!) I actually agree with that one... it's just nasty and dangerous when people throw the cigarette butts on the street....

Thought some of you might find it funny to hear re. cultural tidbit...

I was a three pack a day man until I was 28. Then, on the first Saturday of June, the cigarettes started tasting terrible. I got halfway through my last one and put it out. Have not smoked since. Oh... My maximum sprint is 12 MPH. -Teddy

I smoke and since my father has been diagnosed with secondary brain cancer (originated in lung from his smoking) I am ashamed to say my nicotine habit has increased with all the stress. Kat

Mmmm nothing like a good Belgian beer for sure... I personally LOVE Chimay... it's a beer made by Trappist monks. Great beer in exchange for the life of celibacy... I am personally quite grateful that I don't have choose one or the other.

I also love "A la Mort Subite" (sudden death) as well as "Verboten Vrucht" (forbidden fruit) among the beers I tried while I was in Belgium....
