Psycho Bitch United States 5,857 Posts | I don't think the flag is hideous. Boring and uninspired, maybe, but not hideous. As for the leather pride flag, I've always been a little squicked by the heart. I want to acknowledge that a real person, probably a leatherman, designed the flag, and give it its full due. A couple of years ago was the first time they flew the leather pride flag at the corner of Castro and Market in San Francisco over Folsom weekend, and it made my heart swell with pride. I see that flag flying from a lot of houses in this city, and it always delights me. The current leather pride flag means a lot to me and I have enormous respect for it. But the heart. Hm. Objectively speaking, I don't love it. I prefer Misha's redesign, with the red re-shaped into a central stripe. --

Forum Slut United States 1,623 Posts | SenorJaime: http://truetales.org/writings/breakingnews05.htm#more A proposed flag was unfurled a few days back at the Master/Slave Conference 2005, offered as "representation of the Dominant/submissive or Master/slave Lifestyle." In my opinion, the design is a bit of an eyesore, reminiscent of a visit to the eye doctor, much as I'm usually fond of a red and black color scheme. I also question the need for yet another flag, especially when the I know there's a desire on behalf of some D/S and M/S types to express their uniqueness from the scene-at-large, but do we really need another flag? --
I imagine a lot of people found red and white strips and a blue square with with stars to be jarring once upon a time too. I suppose like anything else this particularly jarring graphic might grow on a person. What I find more interesting than the flag though is this statement that accompanies it: ""The Master/slave Community has its roots in the Leather Community, and it can be said that many in the M/s community are content identifying with only the Leather Flag. There is no intent to denounce our roots, and the Leather Flag will continue to fly proudly in the hearts of those in the Master/slave community." The reason I find this interesting is that when the issue of the source of Leather traditions, terms and practices comes up - few here on bondage.com are comfortable paying homage to Gay Leather. I have seen for example Jay Wiseman recannonized as really good example of a male het. Dom. Jay is a good person, a good author and a consciencious leather practioner, he is not a het male dom good or otherwise. When some sites noted authorities on leather practice or leather tradition like Guy Baldwin or Jack Rinnela, folks often comment back they don't give a rats ass what those guys think, preferring instead to pontificate on their own unsubstantiated origin myths. Many folks on bondage.com seem convinced that D/s and M/s were both invented by a bunch of straight folks somewhere back in the mists of Avalon. They have adopted the Leather flag as their own without having the slightest clue what its enigimatic symbolism might stand for. I am confident that however ugly this flag may seem today. If it persists long enough in Gay Leather, it will eventually be claimed by Het M/s and ultimately attributed to Merlin an Italian Grand Master, a famous long dead Samurai or someother mythical (straight) inventor. Maybe I am just tired - Regards,

Forum Maniac United States 6,700 Posts | Do any of us involved in D/s really need a flag to rally around?.I always thought that D/s could stand up on it's own without being politicized by a few people more interested in promoting personal agendas that may overlap into D/s,but really don't focus on some of the ever increasing problem issues...

Forum Maniac United States 2,105 Posts | i think it is good timing for a new symbol. i think that the community is so big that it could use some more self defining, however that being said that flag does not inspire pride in me. -- amy People ask the same questions, “Are you a sub or a slave?” and “What are your limits?” What I have learned is that it is not so much about the type and color of the clay that reflects the work of art it will become, it is the raw talent, life experience and creative vision of the sculptor and how wet and malleable I feel when in his strong hands…..

| Forum Maniac United States 2,358 Posts | Misha's flag is elegant and don't feel like it is trying to separate from leather. I would fly misha's flag before the d/s flag or the heart in the corner leather flag. Forum Apprentice United States 389 Posts | I don't need or want a flag to represent my sexuality. My kink is not your kink. It is mine. If in a relationship, it is "ours," but still not yours or able to be represented by one flag that also represents an unknown number of other kinksters, each with their own kinks and reasons for them. A flag? No thanks. No offense to those who want it, but I'll just stick to myself and my own private desires. What I do in my bedroom is my business, and I do not feel the need for anyone not involved with me to know. | |
