Forum Apprentice United States 478 Posts | Capitalization is obsolete in an R/T situation. Just another reason to get off the computer and get out there with Doms who can express their dominance in an *actual* manner. I mean....when one is getting whipped with a single-tail to the point of tears....there's no QUESTION as to who the dominant is! L

| Forum Apprentice United States 220 Posts | ize_creeme: ricci, I am glad you got that off your chest, I hope you feel better now. I bet that took a while to write!.. applauding you. Nah. It didn't take any time at all. *s* ize_creeme: But, ricci, I have a suggestion for your profile as an introduction why don't you change "It's not a gift...it's a relationship!" to "Only masters of the English language apply within!" What a thoughtful suggestion. The only problem is I'm not looking for applications. And then there's the issue that if I was seeking applicants, that restriction would certainly limit the eligible respondents. *wink* Ricci Joy Some people dream of things that never were and ask, "Why not?" It is amazing how much time people will spend responding to a rant about such a really unimportant topic. At least this response made me laugh. Thanks for having a good sense of humor! Forum Maniac United States 3,212 Posts | I must drive everyone crazy then.. cuz I very rarely write or should I say type a complete sentence.. though I do try to use proper Capitalization where needed...I just type out my thoughts and separate them with these nifty little dots..... (O they are periods you say, I knew I had seen them before some place.) -- | |

| Forum Initiate United Kingdom 13 Posts | Language has evolved apace since history failed to record the first primaeval grunt of post-coital pleasure. Language in spoken and written form is merely one part of the communication toolkit that defines the human condition. Our ancestors happily modified their tools to reflect changing times, and we continue to do the same. You find it comfortable to cling to late 20th century conventions, but a great many writers do not. You're never going to stop the world from turning, so why not enjoy the ride? | |

You find it comfortable to cling to late 20th century conventions, but a great many writers do not. You're never going to stop the world from turning, so why not enjoy the ride? Okay, I admit it. I'm completely confused. How does objecting to an online convention of inappropriate capitalization translate so consistently to grammar police and the evolution of language? Surely you're not suggestion that I/i can anticipate a world where E/everyone will be communicating with E/each O/other in a this way? That was, after all, M/my point in M/my post. Maybe the problem is reading comprehension? Ricci Joy Some people dream of things that never were and ask, "Why not?" | Forum Initiate United Kingdom 13 Posts | Who knows? Stranger things have happened. My point is that when a group of people choose a typographical or spoken 'shorthand' to express themselves, they are simply doing what people have always done and will always do. The language you and I use every day has evolved in exactly this manner, so it seems a little irrational to object. You wrote in your initial post that "the upper and lower casing of names gives an immediate indication of whether you're a submissive or dominant, so I can see the usefulness". Quite so. In fact, a writer using lower/upper cases in the manner you object to is communicating a complex set of values remarkably effectively with little wasted intellectual effort. 'Abbreviation' is common in all walks of life, for exactly this reason. To strike a humorous note, one might admire such an approach on the basis that it makes your own use of language appear positively long-winded.

slidkrans Moderator United States 37,865 Posts | the butchered pronouns are hilarious, i'll admit. W/we find find t/Them quite tiresome at time. (by W/we, I mean my (feline) Dom, my (feline)Domme, and me.) i was a writer/editor for years, and wish i could discuss this particular subcultural usage with some of my buddies. it would be a nice break from the never-ending argument over Chicago manual vs. AP manual.... however, i've always been lax about using caps in non-business writing. it dates back to the bbs days -- and years of keying all day, every day. save a keystroke where you can. besides, the comments posted on the threads are remarks, not literature (or even journalism). hedgehog United States 2,796 Posts | The capitalization thing doesn't bother me too much. If I read, "Here are My thoughts," I just shake my head, figure they have something to prove, and go on. It's way easier to read than W/we and Y/you, and less confusing than when people refer to themselves in the third person. "This girl thinks" makes me wonder if there are two people.
