Hi, everyone. There's a much longer story here than I want go get into, and perhaps I'll post the whole saga at some point, but please be warned that in the near future (like the next few days), we may need to remove any forum post and clear the contents of any personals profile, essay questions, etc, that mention the words "rape," "bestiality," "lolita," "pedophile," "pedo," or "necrophilia."

This would be totally regardless of the context in which the word(s) are used; for instance "I love Kubrick's film Lolita" or "Pedophile sentenced to jail" would have to go. Heck, if someone posts about measuring how far they walked using a "pedo meter", that would have to go. Not to mention anything about fantasy rape, etc.

We're at least as unhappy about it as I'm sure you'll be, but the fact of the matter is that it may well be a choice between taking this drastic action and just closing the site outright. This is a very scary time to be living in the United States, and we need to do what we can to maximize the chances of this community surviving.

I will post again if and when this happens, but for now please be forewarned that we may need to do this at any moment, and if your profile has any of those words, in any context, I'd advise removing them to avoid having that section of your profile blanked.

Cheers

Hi Aiken,

Thanks for telling us. Can you give me some idea where this is coming from?

I am a firm believer in Free Speech, whether I agree with the content or not.

Is this because this is an 'adult' web site?

Any additional info appreciated.

P

You have got to be KIDDING! Right?

Don't you have some sort of Constitutional guarantee or something?

It's not McCarthy that is alive and well in the US. I would like to say Bush but I do not know the complete context of these new rules are being imposed (ie the person(s) responsible for the laws affecting us here on b.com)

And to have no context put to it? I mean that is ludicrous. What if my personal name was Lolita? My name becomse censored.

I think the post is wise but this is significant enough you need to email a notice to ALL members.

Crap that means once it happens this thread will disappear too... now I am going to have to find that thread I started long ago and copy it to a safe location.

You have no idea how many people have commented on that one as a turn on too...

Well that is taken care of, saved to my harddrive. One thing is for sure a lot of good threads will be disappearing once this happens, there are over a hundred threads that mention the word rape in just the title. This spans almost every forum including humor. I shudder to think of how many times rape is metioned inside threads.

That is sad to hear. Does this affect old threads and posts too, or is it only the active ones that are affected by this?

Old stuff as well -- basically, depending on the severity of what we need to do, those words may need to be completely eradicated from the site, its history, its users, etc.

Who is imposing these "standards" on the site?

VISA primarily, as interpreted and enforced by the two middlemen between us and the actual VISA conglomerate. My personal opinion is that it's part of a backroom deal with right wing congresspeople to help "clean up the internet" in return for bankruptcy law reform that's favorable to VISA. But that is my personal speculation, based on bits and pieces I've learned over the past few years.

Don't you have some sort of Constitutional guarantee or something?

Constitutional guarantees apply to citizens and the government. The clever thing here, in my opinion and based on my informed speculation, is the government's use of a private company to enforce the speech restrictions. VISA itself is under no obligation to allow free speech. And as long as everything is done informally in backroom deals, there's not a whole lot anyone can do.

The answer isn't just to bail on VISA; even if that were financially feasible (which it's not), Mastercard isn't far behind them.

It may or may not be a coincidence that this is happening in the weeks leading up to Protection from Pornography week, a cheesy campaign that only gained legitimacy last year when Bush became the first President to endorse it. Oh, and this year, the election falls right in the middle of said cheesy campaign.

Cheers

I'm curious, what about work arounds such as:

"r*pe," "b-e-s-t-i-a-l-i-t-y," "l0lita," "pedo-phile,"

Will any of the above be at all do-able on the site?

Absolutely, positively not. Depending on what happens, if these rules come down the way I'm hearing they might, we will be out of business if caught trying to get away with breaking the rules. We'll have no choice but to pass on that reality to users.

Gotcha on the work around idea...

Did you guys ever consider separating the "pay" parts of the site and the "community" parts into two separate sister websites? Like 'bondage.com' be the members only site and something like 'bondage-community.com' be the "Visa free" area where their rules on content would not apply... You could just link everything up and a user would easily be able to pass from one server to the other via links as usual.

Just a thought. I've done similar things (for other reasons) with different business sites I've built.

im sure something like that would require more work for the people who run this site.. correct? I don't think they would have the man power to keep something running for such a long term time... but it's a good idea IMO

We're really not into any attempted-sneaky solutions. At some point, VISA would wise up and realize that the sites are the same, and retroactively raid our previous payments in addition to levying pretty huge fines. There really aren't any clever "get around the rules" solutions that last for any length of time.

Cheers
