Fifty-three-year-old Paul Joyal was shot Thursday night outside his house in the 2300 block of Lackawanna Street in Adelphi. Joyal is known for his expertise on intelligence and terrorism and his contacts in the former Soviet Union. He has also been a long-time critic of the the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The shooting came four days after he told "Dateline NBC" that he believes the Russian government was involved in the fatal poisoning of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in London. Yup, and it's an old one, and it's worrying. But the final paragraph you quoted is significant. The connection suggesting the guy was shot for critising Putin is so obvious that it becomes plausible as a set up. There is something very murky going on and it's not clear whether it's Putin or one of the extremely rich exile oligarchs trying to discredit him. I hope your police can get to the bottom of this.

Well, I know there is a pattern of people being shot in Adelphi. But I think you're correct; it was probably a 'hit'. With regard to police getting to the bottom of this, don't count on it any time soon. Adelphi is in Prince George's County. Many of the murders, which used to take place in D.C. have 'spilled over' into PG County. So they have their hands full with homicides. Besides, they tend to think with their night-sticks. I watched three 230 pounders beat the hell out of a guy, who appeared to weigh about 150. Then they just got back into their unmarked cars and drove away. To keep perspective, that happened in the summer of 1977, about five miles from the location of the crime in question.

Well, I know there is a pattern of people being shot in Adelphi.
But I think you're correct; it was probably a 'hit'.

With regard to police getting to the bottom of this, don't count on it any time soon. Adelphi is in Prince George's County. Many of the murders, which used to take place in D.C. have 'spilled over' into PG County. So they have their hands full with homicides. Besides, they tend to think with their night-sticks.
