This is just one piece of a recital he gave not long before he retired. I love the Mozart Rondo. I think...think I have everything on cd, dvd and YouTube by Heifetz. He singularly had the greatest command of the violin of any certainly in the last century and yes...maybe of all time. The only possible exception in my mind might have been Paganini. But of course we can only go by the music he wrote and the written history. If you have a few minutes (9:31) and give it some audio volume, here is simply one of the best examples of turning a horrifically difficult piece into real music and only by the...dominance and complete command of a Heifetz. Piece-a-cake right ? No, you can't see him but it is very good listening though. Just for a holiday treat...listen and watch Here A beautiful womanly form in sight and touch, is pure sexual distinction, compelling when seen...feverish when felt. I've enjoyed huge, wet, ya know wear my snow-shoes or I might fall in slice, and even that...was good. At the risk of further detour...the wife of an old colleague of mine was taught by Heifetz, and she said that he was, in addition, a phenomenal jazz pianist. The only clip I could find of Heifetz playing the piano was of his own composition (which became a hit for Bing Crosby): When You Make Love. More sheer entertainment - from one of the great modern violin virtuosi: Vadim Repin plays Carnival of Venice And appropriate for the season - though it's a hackneyed piece, played by another ATG violinist*: Gidon Kremer plays Winter A. * I always thought that one reason Gidon Kremer never hit it as big as say Perlman was that he looked straight out of Tenniel's illustrations from Alice. [size=3]I don't always care for arrangements of operatic music for solo instruments, but this one is wonderful, and the performance magnificent. Thank you for posting. As for the Paganini - it was thought that he might have been possessed by the devil. One could believe it in watching this video. I liked the close up views of the hands in this. Edited by - TallandOlder on 2009-12-21 16:11:50 Funny how I agree with you about trying to bring musical theater to a solo instrument and also that this perofrmance and being written by Waxman and Heifetz is truly the exception. I personally feel this performance of Carmen's Fantasy and his Tchaikovsky are the two greatest demonstrations of command of the violin, maybe any instrument and maybe for all time. All the while we have been so lucky to have lived in a period when we are saving and enjoying all of this music from the last 3 centuries. I truly doubt that even way into the future, the music and performances of the 17th through the 20th century...will ever be equaled let alone surpassed.
