For an excellent military/SciFi novel, I highly recommend "The Weapon", by Michael Z. Williamson. Elite training to the extreme,
and the most biting (and humorous) social commentary I have ever read.

My personal favourite war films are:

The Big Red One
Saving Private Ryan
Hell In The Pacific
Soldier

For fiction, try Pressfield's Gates of Fire

Both are on the Marine Corps reading list, and the latter is a particularly thoughtful meditation on what it means to be a warrior, and how warriors are made.
