Forum Regular Canada 719 Posts | I am quite stunned by the number of people posting their concerns regarding themselves or their mate. I know I've been around the block many many many times but ... Am I the only one who's wondering if these folks have been living in a cave? Are these just attention seekers in your view? Do we all have some mid-winter cabin fever (myself included)? We have *never* had more information at our disposal than we do these days. What's going on? My hypothesis for today ... I look forward to your thoughts. Best,

Forum Maniac United States 2,891 Posts | When I was new to this, a friend directed me to b.com and a local bdsm group. Not to munches, which he knew about; not to a therapeutic environment, so that I may explore in a safe place; not to simply inquire within myself. He said I'd get a lot of useful information on these boards, which I did (and continue). But there was also the matter of the real deal. I met the man who first whipped me about the same time I joined b.com, so I had the benefit of strangers and real-life mentor alike. For some, the anonymity of the boards is comforting. I knew one man who couldn't possibly purchase bdsm lit in his small town bookstore; was disabled and couldn't travel to get it; couldn't order it because there was a chance his wife would receive the package. B.com was his outlet for learning. I am quite stunned by the number of people posting their concerns regarding themselves or their mate. On the other hand, I've always been convinced that the owners of Websites, not just this one, post some threads to keep the place lively. Look at how many post, then disappear. The past few days there seem to have been a lot of 18 and 19 year olds joining, always with newbie or older doms. A pattern. Do we all have some mid-winter cabin fever (myself included)? I know I do.

Forum Apprentice Canada 444 Posts | IMHO Some of the reasons could be posting out of desperation to spark some life in a dry spell of interesting topics . I think some twist the questions asked so they get the response they are looking for . To validate there opinion more than seeking advice . Obviously this is just a generalization and there are many who are seeking advice . Some people jump in to fast at the start and it would seem they come off as a puppet or some other form of troll . Again there are reasons many hold this opinion and there are many new people i'm sure have honest intentions and seek the advice of others . Quite possibly people ask questions just to put there name out there . Ask a safe question get a few repones and get known a bit . Some what how you might join a conversation already in progress. Some see it too as being a troll ,but i figure it all depends on the approach they take . I guess it could be just what it is . People seeking advice on issues with there S/O . Either way it is a topic and people reply so it's not all that bad.

It's human nature(particularly for the young and inexperienced)to seek validation for a wide variety of concerns. Some want to be told, "You made a good choice," be it for a new pair of jeans or a new lifestyle. Sometimes it's not until we've got a few years behind us--or if we have innate confidence in our own convictions--that we're able to forgo the training wheels and safety nets other opinions provide. My first instinct is always look inward. If I don't find the answers there, I go out and arm myself with as much information as possible. My eyes do the reading, my head manages the processing, and in the end I'm able to derive a satisfying answer from all I've learned. All without having to open my mouth and ask someone else to do my thinking for me. I've been that way since childhood. Forum Slut United States 1,592 Posts | I've only been on here a few years, but there have been several times over the course of those years that there's an upsurge in questions/threads in relationships and help and advice. It's probably just cyclical. That said, I will often look for answers outside myself. I may not take the answers, but it has been a good way for me, at least, to kind of freshen my mind. People get locked into views and thought patterns pretty easily. And sometimes hearing something from someone else's point of view jogs one's brain into expanding it's focus. Tom

| Forum Apprentice United States 377 Posts | I believe people have many different approaches to figuring out themselves and their lives. As long as they're not making themselves too obnoxious to their neighbors I'm willing to hope their going about things in a way that works for them. If I'm particularly bemused I may offer an alternative. You know, if pull your head out of your ass perhaps you'll have a clearer view of the world type of thing. Kind and helpful. Seriously my head spends enough time in my ass that I'm willing to credit many things. I don't originate new posts about myself and my stuff, so far, so it makes for a nice symbiosis. I try somewhat to take people at their word. The alternative would seem to be telling some real people that they are obvious sockpuppets. And that offends me much worse. Because there's no way I can get it right 100%, or maybe even 50%. I do wonder about whether Agents of The Corporation are responsible for some postings. In spite of my belief in the value of compassion, if so, I dearly hope they are burning right this minute in some personal hell of their own devising. Because I've got no way to know or get to them. Probably. But I think it would be such a bad idea as to be unthinkable. But I was just talking about heads in asses, so perhaps it happens. The thing is, it really wouldn't make them any more money, I don't think. And I think the effort would be more productively spent updating the theme of the month more than once every three years. The site is so negligently run that to throw ringers into the forums would be to overindulge in irony. And then, there's the risk of getting caught. A few leaked emails and this site would be history. I really, really need to believe that. Isn't that interesting? I'm reassured by the OPs that come back and respond. Their responses tend to be human, it seems to me. If they were ringers I'd expect them to be more outrageous in throwing coals of the fire, fanning the flames, and being really provocative. Instead, they're defensive, outraged, curious, a whole range of more or less normal reactions. Mostly. | |
